Everything you need to know about rat infestations

You are here: Home / Rodent infestation / Everything you need to know about rat infestations

September 10, 2021 //  by kristof

Usually, the types of rats that infest properties in Montreal are brown rats and black rats. While brown rats are more likely to infest wetlands like crawl space and building parameters, black rats typically infest attics, rafters, or upper floors of buildings.

Signs of a rat infestation

If you hear scratching noises coming out of your walls when there is virtually no activity in your vicinity, it is likely that your home is infested with rats. The presence of feces or urine can also be an indicator.

Damage caused by rats

Rats can defile buildings and contaminate them, which can spread infections. They can also infect food and chew cables.

Smoke tests for rats

A smoke test is a method of checking the integrity of all pipes leading to the main sewer to ensure that there are no openings in the system. All visible openings to the building’s sewer system are blocked and smoke (of the same type used in the theater) is injected into the pipes to see if there are invisible holes anywhere in the system.

This test is recommended when a recurring rat problem is present. Rats usually enter a building through a weak point in the sewer system. The test can locate broken pipes or open drains behind walls or under floors that can allow rats to access the building. We always recommend the presence of a plumber during the test so that the source of any visible smoke can be checked immediately.

Signs of mouse infestation

If you see unexplained signs of chewing or gnawing or if you spot damaged food packaging, you should consider this as a warning sign of an infestation.

Damage caused by mice

Mice, like rats, can chew materials and damage food packages, cardboard, paper, etc. They can also infect you and your pets with a number of diseases.
